The Fairy Queen
Les Arts Florissants performs Purcell’s baroque comedy
Les Arts Florissants, the ensemble from baroque legend William Christie, is coming to Ghent for a performance of Henry Purcell’s most sumptuous musical theatre work: The Fairy Queen. They do this together with the young singers of their vocal breeding ground Le Jardin des Voix.
Purcell wrote the music to Shakespeare’s hilarious comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream, in which dream and reality constantly intertwine. However The Fairy Queen, the celebration of young love and all the ups and downs along the way, also became a direct hit in its own right.
In this new production, Christie joins forces with the French choreographer, director and hip-hop icon Mourad Merzouki. His Compagnie Käfig is reinforced by young dancers from the Juilliard School of New York. With Purcell’s magical music and the many colourful characters, such as the drunken poet, the icy Winter King and the comical farmer couple Corydon and Mopsa, it promises to be a scintillating evening.
