The ECMA Project
Beethoven on the Other Side
In the final phase of his creative life, Beethoven already seems to be standing with one foot in another dimension. Sometimes we already hear harbingers of Bartók or Stravinsky. On the other hand, Beethoven also looks back and writes strict counterpoint like that of Bach. The Mettis Quartet from Lithuania, the French Quatuor Métamporphoses and the Trio Bohémo from the Czech Republic, all ECMA ensembles, put some of Beethoven’s most visionary works on their music stands. They play two of the late string quartets, extremely evocative pieces that are among the ultimate work of Beethoven’s final years. The so-called Ghost Trio dates from an earlier period, but here too Beethoven briefly had his eye on the other side. In the ominously slow movement, Beethoven’s pupil Carl Czerny saw a ‘vision of the underworld.’
