Rough Surfaces

Chamber music with Turicum Quartet, Osimun Quartet & Susato Trio

The collaboration between the European Chamber Music Academy, KASK & Conservatorium, and Flanders Festival Ghent has become a fixed highlight within the festival programme. Each year, it takes on a new artistic form, bringing together leading international ensembles in a programme where tradition and innovation are set in dialogue.

This year, new music takes centre stage: three composition students from KASK & Conservatorium are writing new works for the participating ensembles, and these creations are fully integrated into the concert programme. The result is a concert in which new and existing music meet, challenge one another, and are continually reimagined.

Three ensembles each move in their own way between different eras and musical languages. The Turicum Quartet connects the late-Romantic intensity of Szymanowski’s string quartet with new works by Yngwie Janseghers and Victor Alexandru Colțea. The Osimun Saxophone Quartet places Bach alongside Ligeti, revealing how music from different centuries can resonate across time. Here too, a new creation by Milo van Binnendijk finds its place. The Susato Trio completes the programme with music by Boulanger and Barvinsky, alongside a new composition by Flore Delvaux.

In the days leading up to the concert, the ensembles work with their tutors and the composition students on interpretation, ensemble playing, and the new works on the programme. The masterclasses are open to the public free of charge, offering a close-up view of the rehearsal process and artistic preparation. All information can be found here.
