It will not be possible to fill a stage with 80 musicians performing together on strings and wind instruments just yet. But never fear! We have invited all the large Belgian orchestras to perform their core repertoire at the Festival with an adapted line-up. In this anniversary year, no fewer than all nine symphonies by Ludwig van Beethoven are on the programme.
With his ninth symphony, after all the innovations that he had introduced the indefatigable Beethoven once again succeeds in injecting a revolutionary twist into musical history. The dimensions of the work, especially the spectacular final part with the famous Ode to Joy with lyrics by Schiller, permanently shift the goalposts of the genre. We open our exceptional Beethoven cycle with a recent arrangement created by the Italian Alessandro Bombonati for an extensive wind ensemble.
