The warm-toned voice of Ian Bostridge
British tenor Ian Bostridge knows Schubert’s Winterreise like the back of his hand. He has even written a wonderful book about it: Schubert’s Winter Journey, subtitled Anatomy of an Obsession. No better guide than he, then, to take us on the gruelling and aimless journey of the lovesick young man who, after being rejected by his lover, sets out on foot through the chilly, dark winter landscape. His journey is marked by extreme mood swings between euphoria and utter despair.
Schubert explores the entire register of the human soul. He wrote the hauntingly beautiful song cycle about a year before his death. In the last heart-rending song, the lonely wanderer also appears to have found his ultimate destination in death.
Fortunately, Bostridge does not make the winter journey alone. He brings his ideal traveling companion, the eminent British pianist Julius Drake.
