Du côté Kouter
One of the most commonly cited models for the sonata by Proust’s fictitious composer Vinteuil is the famous Sonata for Violin by César Franck, whose 200th birthday we are celebrating this year. The sonata will be performed by one of the laureates of the Queen Elisabeth Competition Cello 2022. In the magnificent version for cello and piano authorised by the composer himself. Some believe that this is even more beautiful than the original. Franck’s work is even alleged to have originally been intended for the cello….
A hundred years have passed since the death of Marcel Proust, the writer of the groundbreaking novel cycle In Search of Lost Time. Flanders Festival Ghent has seized upon this anniversary to make Time the theme of this edition. Le salon de Proust is a day full of concerts in which the music that inspired Proust sounds out, but which is also brimming with encounters in which we explore Proust’s love of music, the art form into which the phenomenon of ‘time’ is most intricately interwoven. The entire programme will take place du côté Kouter, in a series of magnificently preserved salons on and around the splendid square in the centre of Ghent.
