HORIZON – Célestine Wacquez & Lennert Baerts ◉ Sound of Ghent

Sadly the coronavirus pandemic has shattered the dreams of many young musicians. They have missed the start of their careers and all this young talent is in danger of slipping through our fingers. We wanted to do something about this, so we launched HORIZON! Thanks to generous donations of more than 600 ticket buyers and in collaboration with the various Belgian conservatoires, we are giving a major boost to eight recent Belgian music graduates. We are offering them a professional springboard, including an online concert and a live concert during Flanders Festival Ghent 2021 on 8 and 9 September!

Meanwhile, anyone keen to see these fabulous young musicians in action can turn to the streaming platforms Sound of Ghent and Evil Penguin TV. We're planning 4 broadcasts filled to the brim with music, interviews and dazzling footage of the Gentse Boekentoren, where all recordings took place. Incidentally, this gives you a perfect opportunity to catch a glimpse of this recently restored architectural gem. In short: an absolute must see!

In the final HORIZON-broadcast, we make the acquaintance of two multi-talented musicians. Célestine Wacquez (flute – alumnus Conservatoire Royal de Liège) has already performed in a variety of orchestras, but her overriding dream is to develop her own chamber music projects. With Duo Naos, which she formed with pianist Hans Mathieu, she makes a striking impression!

In late 2020, Lennert Baerts (saxophone– alumnus Koninklijk Conservatorium Antwerpen) released not one, but two albums: one as a composer and one with his acoustic jazz quartet Anti-Panopticon. For the HORIZON recordings, Lennert brought his quartet to the Boekentoren.

★ With thanks to: Conservatoire royal de Liège, KASK & Conservatorium Gent, Royal Conservatoire Antwerp, Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussel/Conservatoire royal de Bruxelles and LUCA School of Arts Campus Leuven/Lemmens.

★ This project is a collaboration between Flanders Festival Ghent, Evil Penguin TV and Ghent University.
