Mahler’s symphonic song cycle in Schönberg’s chamber arrangement

For Gustav Mahler, 1907 was a year of disasters. His position as opera director in Vienna had become untenable due to an anti-Semitic smear campaign in the press. He lost a daughter to diphtheria and to make matters worse, he was diagnosed with a serious heart problem. The composer spent the rest of the summer lonely and depressed in Tyrol, where he found solace in a collection of poems based on ancient Chinese poetry. During mountain walks, he came up with the first sketches for what would later become Das Lied von der Erde, his poignant musical swan song.

Arnold Schönberg paid the ultimate tribute to the composer with a brilliant adaptation of Das Lied. The performance by Camerata RCO is sure to linger long in the memory...
