Matinee concert with piano virtuoso David Fray
Despite his young age, the French pianist David Fray can boast an impressive record of achievements. Having won virtually every prestigious prize for emerging talent, he made a series of much talked-of CD recordings with prominent orchestras.
Fray is valued not least for his playful and idiosyncratic character, which has also led to being compared to Glenn Gould, the iconic performer of Bach’s Goldberg Variations. It is no coincidence that Fray also regards this striking work by Bach as one of his favourite pieces. In a collection of variations on an apparently innocent theme, with his Goldberg Variations Bach presented thirty miniatures with the most diverse musical characters. Navigating between lyricism and tempestuousness, Bach examines the tension of the original theme.
This undisputed culmination of the Baroque period not only demands a virtuosity of the performer that Fray clearly has at his fingertips, but also a musical personality that he is only too pleased to translate into the vocabulary of the piano. During our ‘Matinee Concert’, Fray truly brings out the best in Bach’s brilliant masterpiece!
