Inspired by Van Eyck’s masterpiece ‘The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb’, the renowned Estonian composer Arvo Pärt has composed 'Agnus Dei, the adoration of the Lamb'.
The composition was commissioned by the City of Ghent to mark the themed year 'OMG! Van Eyck was here'. During this themed year, which is being extended by six months, Van Eyck and his world-famous masterpiece The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb are taking centre stage.
Pärt enjoys international fame with his religiously inspired work, and composes both instrumental and vocal music. Indeed, he is currently one of the most frequently performed contemporary composers.
He will present the premiere of his brand-new composition to the audience during Flanders Festival Ghent. The performance of the work will be entrusted to Collegium Vocale Gent, the now world-famous choir of conductor Philippe Herreweghe, which celebrates its fiftieth anniversary this year.
