Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra & Thielemann: Bruckner's Symphony No. 1

Festive opening concert

Description

For decades, St. Bavo's Cathedral and Anton Bruckner's symphonies have been a match made in heaven. In the Bruckner year 2024 – the composer was born two hundred years ago – it’s only fitting to include his work in the festival. And who better than the globally renowned Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra to open this edition with Bruckner?

Conducted by Christian Thielemann, they perform Bruckner’s Symphony No. 1. But this was by no means the work of a novice! The composer was 41 years old and had already written a ‘practice’ symphony. With his First, he was ready to compose a major work.

The symphony contains all the elements that make Bruckner so unique and so loved: the layered structure, the heavenly melodies, the overwhelming climaxes and his unique talent for making us forget time and transport us to another dimension.

Christian Thielemann, who conducted the famous New Year's concert on January 1st 2024, is an unparalleled authority in the classic German repertoire. With his profound interpretations, he evokes memories of the great maestros of the past: Furtwängler, von Karajan etc.

The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra led by Thielemann with Bruckner in St. Bavo's Cathedral: it doesn't get much better than that!
