Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège

Tchaikovsky & Shostakovich

Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège

With its rich tradition, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of Liège is an internationally renowned player. Last season, they made a great impression from Amsterdam to Aix-en-Provence. And now, in Ghent! In this programme, the orchestra brings together two Russian giants, yet a greater contrast between the romantic pathos of Tchaikovsky and the Soviet irony of Shostakovich is hardly imaginable. Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 is the romantic piano concerto par excellence. The composer turns the classical form of the symphony on its head and creates a highly personal and distinctive work.

The Uzbek virtuoso Behzod Abudraimov will undoubtedly do justice to Tchaikovsky (and the audience!). Shostakovich’s Sixth Symphony is something of an oddity, standing between the epic Fifth and Seventh. Chief conductor Lionel Bringuier makes a passionate case for this rarely heard, atypically brilliant gem.
