Miroirs
Utopia Ensemble & Benjamien Lycke
Description
In Miroirs, Utopia transforms music and images from 16th-century so-called ‘pictorial motets’ to contemporary versions. Pictorial motets are 16th-century engravings depicting a religious group of statues holding a legible polyphonic score of a motet. Moreover, they are religious pamphlets to be viewed and understood in the context of the Counter-Reformation.
Ten years ago, because of their cultural-historical value and their rarity, these pictorial motets were added to the Flemish Community's masterpiece list. The music by master composers such as Orlandus Lassus and Andreas Pevernage is hereby included. In this programme, the old pictorial motets are reflected in the creation of new compositions and contemporary images by Benjamien Lycke, who is both composer and videographer.
