The German baritone Matthias Goerne is one of the most exceptionally gifted song interpreters of our time. He is coming to Ghent with a selection from the extensive Hollywood Songbook that Hanns Eisler composed in Los Angeles, where he, along with so many other German artists and intellectuals, lived in exile to escape persecution by the Nazis. Bertolt Brecht, one of his fellow exiles in America, provided many of the texts. For this concert the original piano accompaniment has been specially arranged for the musicians of Camerata RCO, a chamber ensemble consisting of members of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam. Hanns Eisler was the last exponent of the great German song tradition. In this concert, he stands shoulder to shoulder with the composer with whom it all began more than a hundred years earlier: Franz Schubert.
