The German baritone Matthias Goerne is one of the most gifted lieder singers of our time. He comes to Ghent with a selection of songs from two of the most beautiful cycles in the history of German lieder. On one hand, there is the extensive Hollywood Songbook, which Hanns Eisler wrote in Los Angeles while living there in exile alongside so many other German artists and intellectuals, fleeing persecution by the Nazis. Bertolt Brecht, one of his fellow exiles in America, provided many of the texts. Hanns Eisler was the last great exponent of the grand German lied tradition. In this concert, he stands shoulder to shoulder with the composer with whom it had all begun, more than a hundred years earlier: Franz Schubert. In his Winterreise, too, we hear loneliness and banishment, in this case of the rejected lover wandering through the winter landscape. The original piano accompaniment of all the songs has been specially arranged for this concert for the musicians of Camerata RCO, a chamber ensemble made up of members of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam.
