L'Histoire du soldat

L'Histoire du soldat

Salzburger Marionettentheater and Isabelle Faust & Friends

A unique collaboration led to one of the great successes of last year’s Salzburg Festival. The famous Salzburg Marionette Theatre asked the artist Georg Baselitz – the éminence grise of modern German expressionism, who passed away in April of this year – to design the puppets and the set for a new production of Igor Stravinsky’s L’Histoire du Soldat. The internationally renowned violinist Isabelle Faust and some of her musical friends took charge of the music. A masterstroke! This was evident from the reactions of both the audience and the international press.

Stravinsky’s music theatre work for small ensemble was born out of necessity. The composer lived in Switzerland during the First World War and needed a project with a small cast that could easily tour. The choice fell on a Russian fairy tale about a soldier who makes a Faustian deal with the devil, exchanging his violin for a magical book that reveals the future. When the devil is involved, things rarely end well. That was initially true for Stravinsky’s venture as well, since the tour was interrupted by the Spanish flu. Still, L’Histoire entered both theatre and music history as a milestone of modernism.
