Irish Roots & Celtic Dreams

Daniel Hope in search of his Irish roots

Description

Ireland's soul lies hidden in its music. It echoes in the nostalgic folk songs in which the beauty of the Emerald Isle is serenaded, but also in the rhythmic fiddle playing that accompanies dances in the pub.

Together with the musicians of his ensemble AIR, star violinist Daniel Hope goes in search of his Irish roots. Indeed, Irish music has an age-old history. On the programme are works by Irish composers from the Renaissance to the Late Baroque, but also by European composers who have been inspired by Irish music. Händel is one such example: for performances of his Messiah he stayed for a long period in Dublin.

For Daniel Hope, this musical journey is closely connected to his own family history. Indeed, his great grandfather Daniel McKenna left Ireland more than a hundred years ago to seek his fortune in South Africa. Thus in this programme, Hope, who in addition to Irish also has German nationality, also goes in search of himself.

Be enchanted by Ireland’s rich musical culture, laced with myths and legends, with its nostalgic melodies and infectious rhythms.
