Imagination of the Night

Music for 18 Musicians & ROLROLROL

Last year, Nacht van de Verbeelding unfolded across the museums surrounding the Citadelpark. This year, it returns after dark, with music that does not colour the night but electrifies it.

Long before techno had a name, Steve Reich built an acoustic machine of pulse, breath and slowly shifting patterns with Music for 18 Musicians: tightly composed, hypnotic and almost physically addictive.

Afterwards, ROLROLROL — the duo of Jameszoo and Niels Broos — takes that blueprint into the club. Jazz impulses, skewed electronics and glowing grooves gradually push precision into collective intoxication.

Music for 18 Musicians

Eighteen musicians build a pulsing soundscape that slowly pulls you in: precise, rhythmic and unexpectedly addictive. Step into the world of minimal music with Steve Reich, performed by Het Muziek, HIIIT and Storm in a Jar.

The 1976 premiere of Music for 18 Musicians marked Reich’s definitive breakthrough. From the very first minute, harmonies are set into motion: richer, fuller and more immediate than anything in his earlier work. In that same year, Philip Glass reshaped opera with Einstein on the Beach — a work you can experience live on 16 September.

ROLROLROL

After Reich’s shifting minimalist patterns comes ROLROLROL, the project of producer Jameszoo and keyboardist Niels Broos. Their music twists repetitive grooves, sci-fi synths, vocoders and elastic basslines into something playful, precise and slightly unhinged.

During Verbeelding van de Nacht, ROLROLROL transforms Reich’s pulse into late-night club energy: somewhere between post-jazz, electronics and cartoon science fiction. Minimal music — but with sweat, pixels and a grin.
