Double Bill: Moor Mother & Razen
Urgent voice & layered soundscapes
The day after Einstein on the Beach, Moor Mother returns for a duo performance. Camae Ayewa, better known as Moor Mother, moves between poetry, sound and research, exposing how colonial histories remain active in the present. Her latest album, The Great Bailout, takes Britain’s compensation for slavery as its point of departure: a state loan, repaid until 2015, that compensated slave owners rather than those who were enslaved.
For this performance, she is joined by cellist Mathis Mayr, active in the field of new and improvised music. His practice moves between microtonality, historical instruments and non-Western traditions. Together, they build a set in which voice and strings meet without fixed roles: text, tone and noise shaping, shifting and pressing against each other in real time.
That same evening, Razen is also featured. Their latest album Stained Glass Starling was recorded in David Poltrock’s living room. No polished studio sound, no written score. Recorded in single takes, with minimal agreements beforehand. What you hear is attention in action.
At the core are Brecht Ameel, Kim Delcour and Dick van der Harst, joined by Berlinde Deman (serpent) and Paul Garriau (hurdy-gurdy). Between mysticism and otherworldly folk-trance, Stained Glass Starling brings the Razen universe to its most concentrated form. The music is built as a painter at work: layer by layer, with attention to contrast, texture and nuance. All voices coexist in a relational balance, akin to principles found in traditional Indonesian gamelan. A wide range of instruments, including the erhu, tromba marina, Javanese kacapi, harmonium and bass pedal, open the field to new sonic worlds.
