De Grooten Oorlog

SPECTRA

Description

In the lead-up to the Great War, a social conflict was brewing worldwide in which all certainties seemed to disappear. Modernist artists fought their internal battles too, and often found salvation in extreme individualism grounded in their own theories. It was perhaps an escape in which the need for originality and innovation was the only holdout. Debussy, Ravel, Ives, Stravinsky and Berg were exemplary signposts to unexplored paths in this period.

The young Belgian composers Koen Quintyn and Mirek Coutigny stand in an equally conflicted world a century later. How do they experience this inner struggle? Do they too seek out these fault lines? With their blends of folk culture, jazz, pop and other genres, have their modernist predecessors already paved the way? A penetrating programme, with Stravinsky's iconic L'histoire du soldat as the pièce de résistance.
