Chamber Orchestra of Europe & Julia Hagen

Three greats side by side: Schumann, Prokofiev and Shostakovich

Description

The Chamber Orchestra of Europe is one of the most successful cultural projects of the united Europe. The orchestra was founded in 1981 and consists of some sixty leading musicians from all over the European Union who have collaborated with the greatest conductors of the past decades, from Claudio Abbado to Nikolaus Harnoncourt.

They finally come to Ghent, with Russian in Ukraine born conductor Uryupin in a contrast-rich programme. With his brilliant and playful Symphony No. 1, nicknamed 'the classic', Sergej Prokofjev gives a firm nod to the Viennese classical style of Mozart and Haydn. The Chamber Symphony No. 1 is a penetrating and highly personal composition by Dmitri Shostakovich. It is actually a masterful adaptation of the String Quartet No. 8, which he dedicated "to all victims of fascism and war'.

The orchestra also brings along the young Salzburg-born cellist Julia Hagen, who is at the beginning of a global career. She plays Robert Schumann's lyrical Cello Concerto
