Description
The vocal tradition of the Baltic states is world famous. Singing is second nature there. It is no coincidence that in the late 1980s, a ‘Singing Revolution’ against Russian domination took place. Some of the world's best chamber choirs and vocal ensembles hail from the region.
One of these is Vox Clamantis from Estonia: a unique collective that regards old Gregorian chants as the foundation of European music, and in that spirit performs both old and contemporary music. They have already performed all over the world, have won numerous awards - including two Grammy Awards - and have been featured in the Oscar-winning film La Grande Bellezza. They come to Ghent with a fully Estonian programme featuring three generations of composers. The works of Cyril Kreek and Mart Saar, two important composers from the last century, are strongly linked to Estonian folk music. Helen Tulve, born in 1972, is the youngest composer on the programme and is part of a more experimental movement. Of course, the world's most famous living composer cannot be left out: Arvo Pärt, who will celebrate his ninetieth birthday next year.
