To the impressive list of leading voices that Ghent Festival has welcomed in recent years, we are again adding a big name in 2017: the Czech star singer, mezzo-soprano Magdalena Kožená.
Kožená sings at all the great opera houses and works with the best-known conductors, not least her husband Simon Rattle. She has won several Gramophone Awards and is Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in France.
Her great love is baroque music, a genre that is made for her flexible and virtuoso voice. But Kožená has another passion that she has been studying intensively for a year: untamed Spanish flamenco!
In Ghent we have managed to pin her down for a concert in which she can combine her two loves. Heavenly Spanish baroque music by, amongst others, Hidalgo, de Lima and Marín, alternates with fiery flamenco dance and music.
The musicians of the baroque ensemble Private Musicke will play side-by-side on stage with a red-hot flamenco group. Magdalena Kožená holds a dialogue with the star dancer and choreographer Antonio El Pipa: she sings, he dances.
A passionate concert that will leave the Opera in Ghent smouldering for some time to come!
