Mozart’s Requiem in the hands of Les Ballets C de la B
Requiem pour L. by the Belgian company Les Ballets C de la B is the latest brainchild of the Ghent director-choreographer Alain Platel and composer Fabrizio Cassol. Previous productions by this dream duo, such as VSPRS and Nicht Schlafen, have received unanimous in the international specialist press, and this new production has meanwhile also appeared on stage in Berlin, Kinshasa, Cape Town, Athens and elsewhere.
Requiem pour L. was inspired by Mozart’s famous Requiem, which, ironically enough, this Austrian composer wrote on his own deathbed.
In an exotic blend of Western and African musical styles, the composer reveals a common cultural DNA, and in terms of drama Platel, the director, plays with elements of such universal themes as farewell rituals and death. Fourteen African and European musicians meet in this intense all-round spectacular which— before the audience’s very eyes—brings down the boundaries between old and new and North and South.
